Exit And Emergency Lighting

Emergency and Exit Lighting

The main purpose of exit and emergency lighting is to identify the safe exit of the building should there be emergencies. The lights would guide building occupants which way to go to get out of the premises quickly and safely. So it makes perfect sense to have these features in the building.

Regulations for Emergency and Exit Lighting in Melbourne

Exit lights and emergency lighting play a very important role in building security. In fact, there are several regulations mandating the installation of these features. For one, the Building Code of Australia AS2293 states that all buildings need to have exit lighting systems to pass Australian Standards. The lights must be installed in all areas near the exit to stairwells, passageways, lobby areas and hallways. The same type of lights and signs must be installed in every storey of a Class 5 to 9 building where each floor has an area of larger than 300 m2. The lights must work automatically during power failure and must function independently for 90 minutes. Lights must be installed above or adjacent to the exit doors with letters and symbols highly visible.

How Often Should You Test Your Emergency Lights?

Exit and Emergency Lighting Tests must be conducted two times every year by a licensed electricians. However, if you happen to spot faults and electrical inefficiencies at any time, it’s best to fix these issues early on. It also helps to conduct an electrical building maintenance regularly. If you decide to replace exit signages, fittings and faulty lamps, make sure to test if these are working properly prior to the project completion. Battery chargers, control equipment, luminaries, batteries and inverters need to be checked together with an automatic discharge facility and system operation check.

Conducting maintenance and tests routinely is necessary to keep the building occupants safe. The emergency lighting and exit lights would be able to help occupants find the exit areas and get out of the premise quickly and easily.

If you don’t have any emergency lighting and exit lights installed yet or your existing ones already show signs of wear and tear, call 1300 EDC SOL (1300 332 765) to talk with EDC Solutions electricians. Our team can install any type and exit lights and emergency lighting in Melbourne.
